Reinventing the Wheel of Life

Annoying to the hilt, I was a ‘why’ kid, questioning everything. That skepticism has (mostly) served me well.

It can be good to go back to the basics and challenge their premises. To reinvent or repurpose things if it can help.

I believe anything can be improved. Even the wheel.

A new and improved wheel

The Wheel of Life is a commonly used tool in coaching and counselling to help people recognise what's important to them in their life and to track their progress in those areas. However, this traditional wheel wasn't really working for me. My inner child had questions (see above). So I redesigned it. And came up with some fun new ways to use it, too.

Your wheel, your wedges

In the versions I’ve seen so far, the Wheel of Life has fixed categories. This means that the areas of your life are pre-defined — you don’t get to decide what’s important to you.

Here's what I didn't like about the original wheel:

  • Fixed categories

  • Clunky layout

  • Prescriptive instructions

  • Unclear what to do with it

And here's what I changed:

  • Roll-your-own categories (see what I did there?)

  • Improved design

  • New ways to use the wheel

  • Reflection prompts to help you take things further.

In my reimagined wheel, you decide what each wedge represents. This allows you to use the Wheel of Life in a variety of ways, and to choose the categories that are meaningful to you.

When you download the free, editable PDF worksheet, you’ll see additional question prompts that allow you to reflect on where you are currently and where you want to be. This allows you to take some action and make progress toward your goals.

Visit the Wheel of Life page to see four new ways to use the wheel, including progress and reflection prompts:

  • Wheel of Life Goals - this exercise will help you identify your current goals and your progress so far.

  • Wheel of Values - this is a great way to see which values are showing up for you most strongly right now.

  • Wheel of Self-Care - this exercise will support you in identifying your self-care routine and help you see whether it feels balanced for you.

  • Wheel of Fun - this exercise will help you bring more fun and enjoyment into your life.
